What is Firearms Identification?
Firearms Identification is a discipline within forensic science which has its primary concern to determine if a bullet, cartridge case, or other ammunition component was fired from a specific weapon. This determination is the result of physical examination of the subject matter by a qualified Firearm Examiner and the issuance of an expert opinion report.
Who is Mike Sandford?
Mike Sandford began his 34 years of service when he was hired by the Union County Police Department in New Jersey and graduated from the Police Academy in 1986. He was initially assigned to work in the Patrol Division as a patrol officer and subsequently as a motorcycle officer. Upon assignment as a detective in the Administrative Division, Mike assumed the roles of Information Technology Systems Administrator and Records Coordinator. In 2003, he was tasked with launching the Union County Police Department's Forensic Firearms Identification Unit. Soon after, he was promoted through sergeant, detective sergeant, to lieutenant in command of the Forensic Firearms Examination Unit, Regional Police/Fire/EMS Dispatch Center, Records Bureau, and Information Technology Bureau. Lt. Sandford retired from service in March of 2021 and formed Bulleit Forensics as an Independent Consultant in Firearms Identification. He is a member of the Association of Firearm and Toolmark Examiners, a trustee/member of the NJ Forensic Firearms Examiners Association, and a certified Retired Police Officer (RPO) Instructor in the state of New Jersey and a Certified IBIS Instructor. He is an accepted expert in the field of Forensic Firearms Examination in both Union and Hudson County Superior Courts in NJ, as well as, in the U.S. District Court of NJ.
